This triptych by Bro. Ryan Flynn depicts the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity and are considered the theological virtues in many philosophical and religious traditions.
In Freemasonry, these virtues symbolize the moral foundation of brotherhood and personal growth.
Faith represents trust in a higher power and in the goodness of humanity. She is represented by an older woman, who is lit by a source that we cannot see. She poses with her hands in prayer with a penetant stare on her face.
Hope inspires resilience and positivity about the future. In her panel, she is represented by a young woman who holds the source of light close to her heart.
Charity emphasizes love and compassion towards others, and the theme of Agape, the purest source of love and light.
Bro. Ryan decided to make this panel larger than the others, showing a mother gifting her source of light to her daughter, representing an act of true selfless charity. These two figures are the brightest lit to signify the importance of this virtue.
Together, these paintings use light as a symbol to assist fellow Freemasons -and all viewers- in discussing their interactions and self-improvement, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose among members.
