  • The Four Cardinal Virtues: Temperance

One of a series of panels painted by Brother Ryan Flynn which was commissioned for a Lodge in New Jersey, Temperance depicts one of the Four Cardinal virtues which is prevalent in Masonic Ritual.

Temperance is depicted wearing a mixture of blue and natural color, symbolizing a neutral, balanced life void of excesses. The table behind her is covered in purple, the color that typically represents this virtue. While observing a scene, she carefully pours water into her cup, careful to fill, but not overfill the vessel which is emblematic of self-control and awareness.
